Weathering the Storm
Nunavut
I captured images of this mother polar bear and her yearling cubs travelling in a winter storm. The conditions for this shoot were challenging for me, but no problem for the bears. Polar bear's body temperature and metabolic rate won't change even when temperatures drop below -30C. Polar bears have black skin with a layer of fat underneath that can be up to 10cm thick. Their fur is transparent and each hair has a hollow core that directs sunlight down to their skin to be absorbed. This species had many unique adaptations to survive in an environment that we consider to be harsh. This species is biologically engineered for the Arctic!
