Wading Pool
Katmai National Park, Alaska
Katmai National Park is one of my favourite places to photograph grizzly bears. Salmon, plentiful in this area, play an important role in the diet of these bears. The mother to the three cubs in this photograph had crossed the river to fish. The river was flowing too quickly for the triplets to follow, so they anxiously waited for her to return. The cubs were also keenly aware of a large male bear meandering towards them. I photographed the cubs as they jostled for position so as not to be the first to meet the male bear. Of course, mother bear was also watching the situation closely, and soon returned to her cubs. Reunited, the family headed off into the woods.
