Banff National Park, Alberta
I was out with some art students from Mount Royal College to just talk about Photography. The scenic road to Lake Louise is known as an area where you might spot wolves. I hadn’t had much luck in this area, but I told them you never know just what you might encounter. As we came around a corner, I saw tracks in the snow crossing the road. They were whitetail deer tracks with wolf tracks following them, As I had seen similar signs the previous day, I thought there might be something interesting in the area. We came upon an open meadow and stopped. Lo and behold, a black wolf walked right across the road! He walked off into the distance and howled several times, perhaps calling to his other pack members. Of course, they answered and I assumed they must have gotten something to feed upon, perhaps the whitetail deer I had seen them tracking. Once again out of nowhere, this black wolf returned to our area. It crossed the road to travel back in the direction from which it had originally come. It was very cautious with its approach and stayed “In the Shadows” as it made its way back to the pack.
