Banff's Warden of the Wild
Banff's Warden of the Wild
Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta
An alluring autumn day with light snowfall was the perfect setting to have a chance encounter with Banff’s warden of the wild: The Boss. He is like no other bear in the Bow Valley in Banff National Park. Now in his late 20s, outlasting many of his rivals, he has walked these mountains and valleys, crossed rivers, and courted many a female grizzly. He has also survived the human challenges of highways, train tracks, millions of visitors, and expanding communities across his 2,500 square-kilometre home range. Like a game warden, The Boss has done what he can as a grizzly to keep Banff National Park wild and unique. Having fathered over 50% of the cubs in the valley, he has benefited his species. Now older, and maybe a bit slower, he is still no less feared by his main competitor, Split-Lip. Since 2018, The Boss has borne facial scars from what were dominance-related fights, emerging as the alpha male each time, with the scars and claws to prove it.
