Waterton National Park, Alberta

This mountain bluebird was perched on a barbed wire fence in the Waterton area of southern Alberta. While they are called mountain bluebirds, sightings occur more frequently on the prairies than in the mountains. The male bluebirds are brilliantly blue in order to attract a girlfriend. This one was no different, and as he was perched, he was calling out to attract one of the less-brightly-coloured females. Mountain bluebirds don't sit still for very long, so I was very happy to get this shot. The prairie landscape softly accentuated the brilliant blue of this beautiful bird.
