On the BC coast, otters are making a comeback. As a keystone species, sea otters help maintain the health of kelp forests and the Pacific Ocean ecosystem. Their fur, at one million hairs per square inch, insulates them in the frigid waters. Larger groups of otters are becoming a more common sight. One morning, I drifted in a boat among 80 to 100 otters as they prepared for their day, rolling in the water and preening their fur. This playful species had me and my boat mates laughing.
