My first experience with African elephants was so memorable! I was just 50 minutes into my first game drive when a herd of elephants came out of the forest to welcome me. This was a herd of females. Typically, herds are composed of only females. Female elephants spend their entire lives in these tight-knit family groups, made up of mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters, where normally the eldest female leads the group. Male elephants, on the other hand, tend to live solitary lives, apart from a herd.
