Love is in the Air

Cranbrook, British Columbia

I spent six hours photographing these bluebird parents feeding their chicks. The male continued to fly in and out of the cavity below, while the female popped back and forth from above. Songbirds move at incredible speed, which makes my goal to get them in sharp focus challenging. This moment, frozen in time, was captured at 1/2500^th of a second. To be able to capture both birds in the same frame at the exact same time was exceptionally difficult.  Since bluebirds are not common in this area, I felt lucky to be able to observe them for so long. Today, there are 3 billion fewer birds in North America than there were in 1970, equating to a loss of 1 in 4 of our birds. Conservation efforts to address habitat loss and the effects of climate change have already seen inspiring increases in our raptors, waterfowl and woodpeckers. This image celebrates the joy songbirds bring to our lives and the hope we can conserve these populations for future generations to enjoy.
