I had been photographing in the Arctic for two weeks and had seen many polar bears, but no moms or cubs.  On one of my last days, I saw a mom and her cubs having a nap on the sea ice.  A slow approach allowed her to trust me enough to let me spend 6 hours capturing her and her cubs.  There is no question that there is a huge maternal bond in polar bears, as shown in this image.
