Face-Off
Face-Off
Jasper National Park, Alberta
In Jasper National Park, two majestic bull moose were facing off to determine dominance, with a nearby cow moose as the prize. Antler size doesn’t predict who will win, either; dominance is often determined by rutting experience and testosterone levels. Photographing these encounters can be dangerous, but my long lens allowed me to watch from a safe distance. Often, bulls that have already established dominance will be repeatedly challenged to see if their strength has waned. In this case, the less dominant bull backed down, and the larger male followed his partner into the forest.
