I came across this elk herd one early September morning. This bull was with about thirty cows and was bugling to another bull across the valley. It was the peak of the rutting season and the cows were getting nervous. A bit of the steam billowed out of the bull’s mouth as he was bugling. At one point the cows and the bull ran past; another photographer was in the area and had moved too close to them. Bull elk during the rut are incredibly dangerous and I felt kind of nervous with this other photographer going in so close. It’s so important to respect wildlife and their environment and to impact them as little as possible.
