In the rutting season, large bull elk challenge each other to become the head of the herd. In the early evening at the edge of the Bow River, not only were the elk bugling, but also the wolves were howling - a very noisy neighbourhood! The elk had a battle in the river, the head of the herd defending his harem. In the background the wolves circled, watching for weakness and the chance to make a kill while the battle distracted the bulls.
