Newfoundland

It was an amazing morning photographing the puffins along the coast of Newfoundland. They were incredibly inquisitive, sometimes coming within a metre of me. We connected - their eye and my camera lens. These “Clowns of the Sea”, with their bright orange and yellow bill and orange feet, will spend up to eight months of the year at sea, bobbing around and hunting fish. Their vibrant colours appear only in the spring and summer during mating season when they return to their original nesting grounds, to reunite with their lifelong partner. The rubbing of their beaks together is a unique sound of their courtship behavior and often draws the attention of other puffins. To affirm their partnership, the male puffin will often present a gift to the female of feathers, grass, or flowers.
