Banff’s Guardian
Banff National Park, Alberta
I believe this young timber wolf, with its typical 'salt and pepper' coat, was a member of the Bow Valley Pack in Alberta. Early one morning as I was driving near the entrance to Banff National Park, I noticed two wolves playing on a hillside. I pulled over and used my longer lens to photograph them. At times they would just sit there as if they were curiously observing the traffic coming into the park. Given their location near the park entrance, I thought it would be fitting to call this image "Banff's Guardian". The Bow Valley Pack has had to survive in close proximity to humans and activity, including traffic, that comes with them. For the most part, it has been a successful relationship, but not always. They are a species that requires a lot of space, and they aren't always aware of the dangers of roadways and railway lines.
