Misunderstood
Pasqua Lake, SK
This was one of the last images I took during my work for the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the moment brought tears to my eyes. I’m quoted saying, “This is one of the cutest little shots I have ever taken!” The beauty of the nature and wildlife across the prairies is incredible and I am so grateful for Mother Nature. Coyote’s are a misunderstood species, wrongfully accused of wiping out herds of caribou and moose in North America. The truth is, caribou make up only 10% of their diet and moose are rarely attacked. Rodents and rabbits are the coyote’s main food source, reducing the spread of certain diseases to humans. In addition, coyotes help to control populations of smaller predators like raccoons, skunks, etc. and in turn wild bird populations directly benefit. Let’s start to understand where coyotes fit and allow them to play their role in healthy prairie ecosystems.
