State of Grace
Nunavut
"State of Grace" continues the story started with the photograph "Determination". This female bear had previously left the area while the two male bears were fighting. As you can see, she is out of breath, and perhaps feeling somewhat nervous about the two competing males. She had returned to the island alone, and I was very pleased to spot her. The blue light of the ice and the different combinations of blues and whites are true to the beauty of the arctic landscape and provide a backdrop that seems to glow. She soon disappeared up into the mountains, which would provide a safer refuge. It wasn't long after she disappeared that the victorious male showed up, determined to track her. Female bears are often followed for several days, and as long as the male keeps defending her against other males, she will be induced to ovulate. The dominant male, with his superior genetics, will father her children.
