Undercover

Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan

I spend every Earth Day somewhere in nature and doing some photography. On this particular day, I was in Prince Albert National Park and came upon a wolf kill. They had captured an elk and had devoured most of it. I decided to build a natural blind out of pine boughs and sat and waited to see what would happen. It was maybe a half an hour before dark, when I heard the pack running through the trees and snow toward the kill site. My heart started racing! Suddenly, all became silent. A lone wolf came out to the kill. He looked behind him an quickly ran off. I was downwind, so I didn't think they knew I was there, but maybe he was spooked, wondering where the rest of the pack were. He circled downwind of the site, and therefore downwind of me. Then he just sat in the trees, right at sunset, and stared in my direction for 10 to 15 minutes, wondering what I was all about. His gaze was piercing, and you can barely see him as he was "Undercover".
