On the Hunt

Banff National Park, Alberta

This was my first gratifying image of a black wolf of the Bow Valley Pack in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta.

I took this photo during the first encounter with the same wolf that is in the image "In The Shadows". He came right across my path, with a look on his face that he had been up to something. Its motion in the snow shows the advantage that wolves have over their prey. If they can get them into an area where the snow is deep enough to slow down the prey, the wolves can stay on top of the snow and quickly outrun their next meal. On average, wolves require at least one kilogram of food per day, so a pack of ten wolves has to capture a whitetail deer every day or two in order to survive a long, hard winter.
