The Boss of Banff

Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta

It was a beautiful spring day, and “The Boss”, formally known as bear number 122, had not long woken from his winter slumber in Banff National Park.

The well-known 21-year-old bear has an extraordinary story having been part of a collar tracking study, surviving being hit by a train, and fathering 70% of cubs in the valley.

The image was captured along the tracks where “The Boss” was perilously feeding on grain that had fallen from the train hoppers. Catching a glimpse of “The Boss” is a rare and humbling experience, and I felt honored to be in his presence.
