Roses and The Rockies

The Canadian Rockies, Alberta

The Three Sisters are synonymous with Canmore and the Bow Valley.  These three peaks – named Faith, Hope and Charity – tower steadfastly above the town and valley, for all to admire.

I had scouted this location several times the previous fall to capture its beauty, but the vista just seemed to lack a “punch”.  What did catch my attention, though, was Alberta’s provincial flower, the prairie rose. I decided to visit when the plants blossomed, and waited for just the right morning when the blooms were at their peak.  At 4:30 a.m., sitting on the edge of the turquoise waters of the Bow River, I waited for the sun to rise on what promised to be a beautiful summer morning. The moment was accented with the water’s gentle rolling sound, the crisp and cool mountain air, and song birds chirping their melodies in the forest beside me.  Pure bliss in the comforts of Mother Nature!  I never know what lighting or sky I’ll get until sunrise.  I was hoping for some very active colours to illuminate the clouds; instead, I was provided with a ‘bluebird’ start to the day, with just a few clouds.  I was happy my intentions for the image were not realized.  It was a perfect backdrop for such a colourful foreground.  When you let nature create the canvas, it is always perfection.
