It proved to be surprisingly difficult to photograph a single image of land, ocean and a 60-foot species that spends much of its time below the ocean’s surface! Most whale species are very social and naturally curious. Humpback whales were decimated by commercial whaling in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Consequently, they were one of the first species protected under The Endangered Species Conservation Act, now known as the Endangered Species Act. Today, they are a species “of least concern.” The remarkable recovery of the great whales means a much healthier ocean and a much more stable system in the face of climate change and ocean acidification. They are the ecosystem’s engineers, moving nutrients around through their deep-sea dives and migrations which in turn aids other species – as well as global carbon storage and the health of commercial fisheries. They are also altruistic, intervening when one of their fellow whales is the target of an attack by killer whales, and even to defend other species.
