Swimming Lessons

Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan

While out kayaking, I happened upon this loon out for a swim with her young.  Loons generally have one or two chicks a year and the babies are able to swim immediately after hatching.  Swimming is tiring work for the newborns though, and they’ll often climb onto a parent’s back for a rest and to conserve heat.
