Fierce Focus
Coastal British Columbia
I watched this species of black bear on the BC coast, fishing in one of the many rivers involved in the salmon run. The salmon run is integral to a healthy ecosystem, they feed us, tell us that our rivers are still healthy, and at least 137 different species depend on the marine-rich nutrients that wild salmon provide. These bears are a necessary part of that healthy ecosystem and create a chain reaction in the forests surrounding them when they drag salmon carcasses from the rivers. Nitrogen from the bodies of the salmon help plant species flourish, which in turn brings more songbirds to the area, and so on. This bear was only 15ft from my 200mm lens, however, he had such a fierce focus on the fish, I didn’t feel threatened at all.
