Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta
What an incredible encounter with a female wolf! Her belly showed she was nursing young, making her the alpha female of her pack. She was on a hunting excursion along her trail when our paths crossed. Wildlife photographers can work months to capture images of wild wolves. Happening upon this one was a gift. As she emerged from the dark forest, I had a split second to take the image. Adults can travel up to 70 kilometres per day, bringing food back in their belly and regurgitating it for their young cubs. Their home ranges depend on the abundance of prey, and can range from 50 to 3,000 square kilometres.
