26—that is how many black rhinos are left in the Ngorongoro conservation area.  Twenty years ago, there were over 100. The main cause of the decrease in the rhino population is poaching. Sadly, some of the wealthiest people in the world believe that rhino horn is a status symbol. Rhino horn can fetch up to $60,000/kg, more than gold or cocaine. Across Africa, 8300 rhinos have been poached over the last decade, the majority in South Africa, home to 80% of the world's rhino population, where they are losing over 1000 per year. Rhino reproduction is very slow, and as such, even under the most optimistic scenarios, it will take a long time for rhino populations to recover. In her lifetime, a female rhino will typically only replace herself, and possibly add one new female to the population. We need every rhino. We need the world to stand up!

I was honoured to spend the better part of a day with this family of rhinos. What an incredible encounter with an endangered species. Experiencing this was a lifelong dream. Let's make sure future generations have the same opportunity.
