I had so many incredible experiences with lions while I was in Africa, but the ultimate experience was the one that ended with me capturing this photograph. Two lions challenged each other, one of whom was protecting his girlfriend. The battle that ensued was incredibly intense, and left this lion “battle scarred”.
Although the lion is generally known as the king of the jungle, lions are not invincible. African lions are listed as a vulnerable species, their population having been almost cut in half over the last two decades due to retaliatory killings by farmers, trophy hunting, and habitat loss. Whether they are kings or not, though, all species have a right to make their home on this planet.
