‘Owl’ You Need is Love

Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan

In a hidden coulee on lands conserved by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, I spied through my binoculars something perched in a nest atop an old tree. I hiked through the forest to the base of the tree that held the nest. From the base of the tree, I could tell it was a great horned owl’s nest with owlets. Fortunately, I could set up a blind on one of the coulee slopes and have a great vantage into the nest bowl to photograph this family. As it was early spring, the trees had few leaves. The two siblings relied on each other for comfort, company, and warmth during many of the cool and breezy spring days. The parents were primarily hunting, and only occasionally visited the nest to drop food and do a quick check. On one particular evening, these two owlets snuggled and got comfy as the air-cooled and the light began to fade. They relied on each other throughout the night – and I was there to capture that fading moment.
