Resilience

Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan

I have observed and photographed this fox in Prince Albert National Park for the last four years. Snug in her warm winter coat, she peeks out with just one eye to look at me. What she conceals behind her fur is that she has only one eye. The cause is unknown, but her nose is scarred with a scratch as well. The fact she continues to survive is incredible, given how critical a fox’s eyesight is to their frenetic lifestyle. Unlike most canids, foxes have vertically split pupils that allows them to precisely regulate the amount of light entering their eyes. They can hunt and navigate in almost any lighting conditions. Not only has she survived, she is in great health. This fox exemplifies the remarkable resilience of nature.
